say that its hard to get a part time job at our age, but, I’ve managed to go from having one job to another quite easily, so what that I’m working at a pasty shop, McDonalds or a hairdressers. I’m earning my own money, working pretty fucking hard and I’m reaping the rewards. If people want money as much as they say they do, they will work wherever they can, people need to get off their metaphorical high horse.

Personally not a fan of this attitude. It’s only a small point but I don’t like the idea of people being made to feel inferior because they don’t want to spend their day doing a menial, mind numbing, uninspiring job. It’s not just laziness or selfishness or pretentiousness - it’s the mind’s natural reaction when being presented with a boring, unfulfilling, unrewarding task. I can’t see the logic that doing a job you don’t enjoy is something to feel proud or superior because of. In the grand scheme of things, it’s pretty meaningless. All it means is you have some income, nothing to do with your character. If you really feel the need to judge people you’ve never met, there are much better yardsticks to measure them against.

Also, across the country there are six unemployed people for every job vacancy. I’m no gambler, but I know they’re crap odds, especially when you have no previous employment. Yet somehow unemployed people are the ones being victimised. It’s in things like this that our culture’s tendency to have a short sighted view of problems and to not pick the bigger, strong targets that are the root of the problems shows. It’s easier to complain about the unemployed and put all of the onus on them to fix the problem, when in fact the full picture is a lot broader than that and they couldn’t fix it if they wanted to.

At the ages of 16-20, you can’t expect to be working the worlds most enthralling, riveting or exciting job. All I’m saying that people shouldn’t turn their nose up at others that do mundane jobs, if we weren’t working these jobs; Who would sell you your fries? Who would sell you your Topshop shirts? Who would tell you where the potatoes are? Honestly, the job may not be that rewarding but when I’m sitting there at Latitude, Reading or in the bar buying my own drinks I can sit there and think, I’ve paid for this, I think that is bloody rewarding! Also, I think the fact that these people state how much they need the money or a job, they would be willing to work any job. I’m not saying these jobs should be their careers, because quite frankly I don’t want to work in McDonalds for the rest of my life, but its a means to an end and also you’re not sponging off your parents.

Also, if you haven’t got any previous work experience there is going to be somewhere that will employ you, such as McDonalds and then you could work there for a few months and then move on to a different job that you prefer. I’m not blaming the unemployed for being unemployed in the slightest. All I’m saying is if these kids want money, they shouldn’t moan about it, they should do something about it. At the moment, I’m going to college full time and working 14 hrs + a week and at the end of the day I feel like I deserve to say what I said.
